Kaylynn to Become First in Her Family to Graduate from High School

By Catherine Krummey, Treehouse Communications Specialist

Kaylynn is excited about her future but also feels the pressure of being the first person in her family to graduate from high school.

When she needs to relax and take a break from studying, she listens to music, spends time on social media and hangs out with her cat, Pluto. It’s an important balance for her.

Liz Lanning, Kaylynn’s Treehouse Education Specialist, has been there to support her the past two years as she maintains that balance, works toward graduating from Liberty High School in June and figures out what she wants to do next.

“It’s been good to have her,” Kaylynn, 18, said. “She helps me stay on top of my assignments.”

Kaylynn always had been a good student but struggled with missing assignments when she first started working with Liz.

“She made a really quick turnaround and got her assignments turned in,” Liz said. “It’s been amazing watching her grow in our time working together.”

Kaylynn was first introduced to Treehouse through our Educational Advocacy program, which assists K-12 students across Washington state with urgent educational needs.

After she relocated from Chehalis to Issaquah, she was paired with Liz through our Graduation Success program.

Following graduation, Kaylynn plans to attend Bellevue College to study nursing. She wants to become a pediatric nurse.

“I used to babysit, and I like working with kids and babies,” Kaylynn said. “I always knew I wanted to go to college. Having Liz around to help me figure out what I could do has been great. She let me know that I can do it and gave me the motivation I need.”
