Tae’Shaun Visits Fire Station 11

By Emily Snitker, Treehouse Marketing and Communications

“What are you doing after high school?” is a question that can often feel like a burden for students unsure about their plans post-graduation. But talk to Eastlake High School senior Tae’Shaun, and you’ll get a confident answer: “I want to be a firefighter. I know it’s a challenging and competitive career track, but I want to be able to help my community. My family and friends agree that I have what it takes—I work hard, I’m focused, and I’m friendly to everyone.” he shared.

With this clear career goal in mind, Tae’Shaun has been working with his Treehouse Education Specialist, Jaime Burns, to lay out his path there. After researching the field and learning about the educational requirements needed to become a firefighter, Jamie recommended that Tae’Shaun try getting some on-the-job exposure to the field. The pair set up a job shadow for Tae’Shaun with Marc, a firefighter at Renton Station 11.

When Tae’Shaun arrived, he was greeted by the crew and given a master tour of the station, where he was able see everything from the garage to the sleeping quarters. Tae’Shaun was able to meet firefighters who came to the station from all kinds of career paths and backgrounds. After getting all of his questions answered, the crew immediately put Tae’Shaun to work. They handed him a protective vest and helmet and told him to hop in the truck—he would be joining them on local calls for the rest of the day!

While there is no typical day for a firefighter, going on calls for minor fires and medical emergencies helped Tae’Shaun see what characteristics and skills are needed to be successful on the job. “It’s incredibly demanding, both mentally and physically. Firefighting takes a toll on the body, but you have to remain mentally alert at all times,” he shared.

When the day was over, Tae’Shaun was exhausted but encouraged. Seeing the crew in action helped him visualize what his future as a firefighter could look like, and gave him the motivation he needed to finish up his senior year strong. So, what’s next for Tae’Shaun? After graduating in June, he’s heading to Everett Community College to begin his associate degree in fire science!

Thank you to Marc and the crew at Renton Station 11 for helping Tae’Shaun feel like part of your team!
