Student Incentives Help Lead to Success

By Danielle Laliberte, Treehouse Little Wishes Manager

Achieving personal goals in life often requires a shift in mindset and a lot of self-discipline. Many of us need an incentive to help get us started as well as stay on track. The same is true of many Treehouse students.

Treehouse Education Specialists meet weekly with their students helping them set academic goals, checking in on progress, and troubleshooting any barriers. Lack of motivation is one of the barriers many Treehouse students face. To help provide Treehouse students with the extra motivation they need to start making forward progress, Treehouse Education Specialists often partner with their youth and the Little Wishes team to develop incentive plans. These personalized plans enable a youth to self-determine their goal, timeline, required steps to achieve the goal, and the incentive they think will provide that little extra nudge that can help lead to success.

Here are a few recent Treehouse youth stories of success:

Treehouse Education Specialist Devin Howell’s student earned the game Minecraft for successfully completing all of his missing homework assignments in class.

The student shared the following about his incentive plan experience:

How did having an incentive plan help you accomplish your goal?

I had something to look forward to since I actually wanted what was being offered which was motivating.

How do you feel about accomplishing your goal?

Hard work paid off! Improving my behavior in school and home has helped me stay out of trouble and keep me on track with my education goals of passing all of my classes.

Now that you have achieved this goal, what are hoping to achieve next?

My next goal is to get all A’s and B’s. I would also like to get into some more honor classes next semester.

Treehouse Education Specialist Liz Lanning’s student earned a hydration pack for successfully raising his grade in English at the end of last semester.

The student shared the following about his incentive plan experience:

How did having an incentive plan help you accomplish your goal?

I was motivated to pass English for the grade, but it didn’t seem to be enough. We had talked about there being an incentive for bringing my english grade up, but at first I couldn’t think of what I wanted. Near the end of the semester I finally decided that I really needed a hydration pack. We signed the plan, and I studied for my final, finally having the motivation I needed, knowing that if I did well on it I would get a passing grade and a hydration pack.

How do you feel about accomplishing your goal?

I feel happy that I was able to get his hydration pack to use when long boarding and at a martial arts tournament in Las Vegas over the summer. Also, I am proud that I did well on my English final to bring up that grade and pass the class.

Now that you have achieved this goal, what are hoping to achieve next?

Pass my classes this semester.

Treehouse Education Specialist Kelse Allen’s student earned a Pokemon Fat Pack for successfully writing homework in his planner and turning in homework at least twice weekly for the whole school year.

The student shared the following about his incentive plan experience:

How did having an incentive plan help you accomplish your goal?

It made me feel more open to actually writing my assignments down. It pushed me further than I normally would have taken things.

How do you feel about accomplishing your goal?

I feel good about myself. I feel proud of myself. I never really kept track of my work before.

Now that you have achieved this goal, what are hoping to achieve next?

I feel like getting more of my work done for sure. I still struggle sometimes but not as much as before.
