Educational Advocacy Youth Trainer

Treehouse, an innovative youth service agency that supports youth in out-of-home care, is looking for youth or young adults with experience in out-of-home care as an adolescent to serve as Educational Advocacy Youth Trainers. Youth Trainers will provide workshops that support middle and high- school youth in self-advocating for their educational needs in school and planning for the future. The youth training program is a pilot program funded by the Stuart Foundation.

Youth Trainers will attend a Train-the-Trainer Program in May, learning skills and receiving workshop training materials. Following this Program, trainers will conduct a minimum of 1 workshop training for foster youth and youth in out-of-home care. This practical training includes self-advocacy skill building, learning about educational rights and responsibilities, and planning for after high school.

This is a part-time, temporary position from May 25, 2013 through September 30, 2013, not to exceed 8 hours per month. This position pays $15.00 per hour and reimburses for mileage. No medical benefits are offered with this temporary position.

Qualifications:

  • Youth or young adult with experience in out-of-home care as an adolescent.
  • Current enrollment in post-secondary education.
  • Experience in public speaking.
  • Enthusiasm for training groups of middle and high school youth.
  • The ability to deliver a curriculum as written.
  • Experience working with individuals of diverse social, economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Reliable, on-time and responsive to email and phone calls from supervisor.
  • Reliable transportation, current driver license and at least minimum WA State driver insurance coverage required. Ability to travel within King County.

POSITION OBJECTIVES

  • Improve the educational outcomes for youth in foster care by providing effective educational trainings to our target population using Treehouse curricula.
  • Ensure accurate, timely data collection through the established evaluation measures.

 AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY

 Training:

  • Attend all mandatory Train-the-Trainer workshops. This time will be used to learn youth training skills and the material for the training. We will also discuss responsibilities and training styles.
  • Regularly communicate with Educational Advocacy Statewide Training Coordinator.
  • Present a minimum of 1 training, with 5-10 participants in attendance.
  • Disseminate and collect evaluations and report results to the Coordinator.

General Training Responsibilities:

  • Deliver Educational Advocacy curriculum; specific module of Youth Self-Advocacy Workshop. Use of PowerPoint and other visuals may be required.
  • Abide by all facility use agreements including, but not limited to, set-up and clean-up, or food serving and/or any other requirements.
  • Ensure resources, manuals and handouts are available for each participant.
  • Arrange use of audio-visual equipment as needed.
  • Create a workshop environment that is inclusive and respectful of all participants.

2013 DELIVERABLES

  • Provide a minimum of 1 training to our specific population.
  • Administer pre/post surveys to all training participants and submit to Treehouse.
  • Refer clients to Educational Advocates and Education Specialists when training participants have advocacy needs.
