Report to Our Community 2010

Because of you, in 2010 kids in foster care had more fun, succeeded in school, and are now looking forward to brighter futures. Kids in foster care dribbled basketballs, dove into pools, and pirouetted across stages because of your dedication and support. Treehouse youth developed skills, felt the joy of passing a test that seemed unbeatable, and defied the odds by earning their diploma, and continuing their education after high school. Thank you for the difference you make in the lives of youth in foster care.

Our Stories

Kids arrive in foster care because of a crisis that has left them forever changed. Treehouse steps in to help them be kids and to get them ready to be adults. The programs you support help kids in foster care get the things they need to fit in and feel good, enjoy the best parts of childhood, and overcome obstacles to academic success.

Math has always been hard for Janelle. When she started attending tutoring at Treehouse she had no idea what fractions were and did not know how to divide. She was in eighth grade and doing math at a fourth grade level — but she was determined to improve and worked hard with her Treehouse Educator and her caregiver. Janelle not only understands how fractions work now, she is getting A's and B's.

Alex was struggling at the beginning of the school year. When his Treehouse volunteer tutor got to know him and learned about his love of music, she connected him to the Little Wishes Program. Little Wishes made it possible for Alex to take saxophone lessons and connected him to a program that provided a newly refurbished sax, new reeds, a new mouthpiece and a case. Alex's grades are up, he is experiencing the joy of mastering an instrument, and his sax teacher thinks he has perfect pitch.

As a high school senior, Lisa did not have enough credits to graduate on time. Because of the support she found at Treehouse, Lisa did not get discouraged or give up. She enrolled in a night class to make up credits and attended tutoring at Treehouse regularly. Her College and Careers Program Coordinator helped her find a volunteer job at a museum she loves to help meet her service-learning graduation requirement. Lisa starts community college next fall, and she plans to pursue a career in health sciences.

Our Vision

As we look back on 2010, we want to express our deepest gratitude for your generous support, active involvement and meaningful partnership. We are inspired by your vote of confidence and your commitment to all that we can make possible in the lives of our most vulnerable children and youth. With your help, Treehouse was able to serve 4,739 foster kids in our community with programs that help them succeed in school, meet key material needs, and provide childhood experiences that every kid deserves.

Treehouse is proud of its many 2010 achievements. Foremost among them is that we were able to sustain our statewide Educational Advocacy program that serves over 1,500 foster youth each year by proposing an innovative public/private funding partnership with the State of Washington, saving the program from complete elimination. Treehouse also refined our College and Career Planning program to a staff-driven, school-based model that made it more effective in addressing barriers to high school graduation and college readiness.

Treehouse is one of very few organizations nationwide committed to education success for foster youth. As we look to the future, we are keenly focused on our strategic goals for the next five years. Paramount among them is that foster youth graduate from high school at the rate of their peers, and gain the skills they need for successful transition to adulthood. When foster youth graduate high school, they are exponentially more likely to avoid the pitfalls of poverty, teen pregnancy, homelessness and incarceration and to go on to productive and satisfying futures.

To that end, we are currently evaluating our education programs in light of best practices and cutting edge research in education and child welfare to ensure that Treehouse does everything in our power to achieve that goal. We are exploring ways to increase our capacity to serve more youth, and to serve them longer to achieve the strongest possible outcomes for every youth. We look forward to sharing what we learn and ways that you can get involved to make high school graduation a reality for foster youth.

In the meantime, it is with gratitude and enthusiasm that we share with you all that you helped us to accomplish in 2010.

Thank you,

Janis Avery

Community Events for Treehouse

No matter their age or background, these everyday superheroes have figured out how to put the "fun" into fundraising for foster kids. We receive the most incredible support from people willing to lend their passion, creativity, and time to create events that benefit kids in foster care. From lemonade stands and birthday parties, to company events and fashion shows, these folks raised $241,287 for Treehouse in 2010!

The instructors and staff at Equine Life Solutions work with former foster horses, so it makes sense that they would also have a passion for providing for foster children. This fall they held a benefit for Treehouse at their grounds at Horse Haven in Bear Creek. Thanks to Equine Life Solution's generous support, community members enjoyed pony rides, dinner, and line dancing — all while raising over $1,500 for kids in foster care!

Top community events in 2010

Kids know best what other kids might need or want, so we love working with our youngest Treehouse volunteers. These motivated young people are making a huge difference for foster kids!

Sierra, a 5-year-old, was watching TV one morning when she saw a Treehouse kid talking about his experience in foster care. Sierra was moved to action. Ten minutes after her mom suggested doing a donation drive, she was on the phone to her grandparents, aunts and uncles, and family friends. After collecting over $1,200 from family and friends, Sierra and her mom went shopping for new back-to-school clothes to stock the Wearhouse.

Top Kids Helping Kids in 2010:

  • Lindbergh High School DECA is a student-run club that put on a school talent show and raised money for Treehouse through the ticket sales.
  • Meridian School ran a successful holiday donation drive that raised over $3,000 and holiday gifts.
  • Tom Fox hosted his annual neighborhood holiday donation drive which collected new toys, clothes, and over $800 for Treehouse.

Donation Drives

The most amazing fundraisers at Treehouse are people in the community who just want to make a difference for foster kids. Donation drives hosted by both individuals and businesses help us stock the Wearhouse and raise money for Treehouse programs. In 2010, donation drive hosts raised an astounding $153,659 and thousands of donated items through the combined efforts of 415 donation drives.

Neiman Marcus at the Bravern in Bellevue did their first donation drive for Treehouse this year. They had such a great time collecting toys and clothes for foster kids during the holidays that they engaged their staff for a second drive in support of Back-to-School! To bring the experience full circle, Neiman Marcus supported a day of volunteering where the staff used their considerable experience in fashion to spiff up the Treehouse Wearhouse!

Our Volunteers

Volunteers work tirelessly at Treehouse to improve the lives of youth in foster care. Our amazing volunteers help with a range of critical support functions, including greeting kids and caregivers at the front desk, tutoring foster youth one-on-one, sorting donations and stocking the Wearhouse, and making sure fundraising events go smoothly. Treehouse is incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by a caring and generous community, willing to show up and work hard for foster kids.

In 2010, Treehouse had 2,165 people volunteer their time for a total of 28,084 hours. That is the equivalent of the work of more than 13 full time employees! The value of the time donated by Treehouse volunteers totals $226,780. Treehouse deeply appreciates this amazing gift.
